FEP Professional Photographer of the Year 2021 is Antti Karppinen!

The FEP Awards 2021 have been our biggest competition yet, both in term of participants and images sent to the competition; we received more than 2600 images from over 300 photographers in 25 different countries! That is simply amazing and once more we wish to thank all photographers who took part in our competition.
For the second year running, the results of the competition were announced in an online ceremony on Sunday, April 11. If you want to revisit the ceremony, the recording is available on our Facebook page

A team of 29 international judges (see more about them here) together with our competition Chairman Johan Brouwers had to work hard to go through all of these images and select the best of the best of them. Brouwers says: ”A new name, new categories, clear and adapted regulations, an extensive team of dedicated jury members, a hell of a job for the chairman and the FEP Awards team, but the brilliant results that confirm the high standard of European photography made every minute spent on it worthwhile thanks to all of you.”
This year, the most shining star of the high standard is our new reigning champion and FEP European Professional Photographer of the Year 2021 is Antti Karppinen from Finland! The Chairman commented: “Last year, Antti Karppinen was already a multiple camera winner. The competition for the ultimate trophy with other golden camera winners was fierce this year. But with these deeply thought-out images telling us a strong story full of symbolism, we have a worthy winner.”

You can see a gallery of the all 12 golden camera winners and well as other winners and awarded images HERE

During the FEP Awards online ceremony, also the winners of the FEP Young Photographer Award and FEP Photo Book Prize were announced.

The winner of the Young Photographer Award is Raïs de Weirdt from Belgium, you can see her portfolio as well as the 2 merit winners’ portfolios here.

The winners of the fifth edition of FEP Photo Book Prize are introduced here.

Congratulations to all 2021 winners!

An extraordinary General Assembly was held online, on November 16, 2020. During this meeting, the budget for 2021 was approved. The FEP wants to support its member associations during these difficult times and the membership fees will be temporarily reduced by 25% for 2021.

Otherwise we are prepared to have a “business as usual” year, conditions allowing there will be 2 qualificafion judging sessions in 2021  (June and November-December) as well as the annual Awards gala.  Some of our qualifications take place online, and these remained unaffected even in 2020 and will continue normally in 2021.

Should the COVID-19 pandemic still represent restrictions  for our activities in 2021, we will then react accordingly.

During the GA, a new venture for copyright initiatives was set up, we will inform more about this once the project moves forward.

The article was largely concentrated on the Belgiand award winners of the competition, which is completely understandable. But in addition to the introducing the Belgians, the article also featured our overall winner, European Professional Photographer of the Year, Darya Matrosova or Dasha Art as she calls herself professionally. Review of her images is written by Vincent O’Byrne, an Irish MQEP Photographer

The panel is extremely well considered and yet it is quite simple in its concept. It adheres to all the criteria of excellence in that it has IMPACT, COMPOSITION, LIGHTING and WORKMANSHIP.

All of these crucial elements are handled extremely well.
It is avant-garde and classical at the same time

It is delightful to see that the model, in all three images remained black and white so there is no distraction away from them.

The hint of yellow as an earring is acceptable and not distracting.
The touches of colour on the table bring a sense of surrealism to the whole concept.

On the yellow table the figure is involved with triangles, from the design of the iron to the models hat and shoulder pads. The eyebrows and eye shadow follow the same triangular idea.

In the image with the egg, ovoids and circles are conveyed in the same way and in the red leafed book, the idea of rectangles is pretty evident to see.

All in all, a wonderful idea that is carried out to perfection and a worthy WINNER.

Due to the prevailing COVID-19 situation we have had to make the difficult decision of cancelling also the planned November QEP/MQEP judging session. Travel restrictions in Europe change nearly daily, so under these circumstances it was impossible to commit to having the judging session in November.

So the next available QEP/MQEP will be in Slovakia, in June 2021. We invite all interested photographers to submit their applications for that session. If you have already submitted an application for the November 2020 session, it will be automatically transferred to the next available session.

The whole year of 2020 is not lost though,  during the rest of the year we will be able to run the online based qualifications (EP, EV and QEV) normally. So if you are interested in achieving one of these qualifications, please refer to our website for further information on applications.

Important information about Rome

Unfortunately, we regret to inform you that circumstances surrounding the continued spread of COVID-19 (Coronavirus) and most recently the decree issued by the Italian Department of Civil Protection suspending demonstrations and events of any kind that would cause attendees to be closer than one meter of others in attendance, we must cancel the event in Rome and make other arrangements.

Before releasing this statement, we worked hard yesterday to find other alternatives for our General Assembly and annual Awards ceremony and we are pleased to inform you that solutions have been found!
The General Assembly will be held in connection with the next QEP/MQEP judging session in Poprad, Slovakia, in June. We currently anticipate the meeting to take place on Monday morning, June 8th.

Because we know all finalists are keen on finding out their positions in the competition, we felt that we could not keep you in suspense until June. Therefore, we will arrange an online award ceremony with a dedicated premier time where all winners will be revealed. We are currently working on the details of this broadcast and are dedicated to releasing it as soon as possible. Further details will be communicated once we have confirmed them. We understand it is not the same as having a ‘real’ ceremony, but we hope it will nevertheless help you to celebrate your fine achievements in the competition.

Those of you who are also finalists in the WPC will soon receive more information about the new arrangements of that ceremony. Also, if you had signed up for activities in Rome that required payments (such and dinners or workshops), you will be contacted by the organizing committee to arrange for refunds.

We are deeply saddened about this and recognize that the situation has created difficulties for all involved. Travel plans will have to be cancelled and new ones created. We will make available the official statement from the Italian government, which will hopefully help you with claims with your insurance companies or airlines. We trust you understand that in this difficult situation this was the only decision we could make. We look forward to meeting you other events in the future!

We remain at your disposal for further inquiries.

FEP is organising the event in Rome together with the World Photographic Cup. After a meeting on Monday evening (Feb 24) both organisations are committed to providing a safe environment for their awards celebrations. We are closely monitoring the recent developments in northern Italy, and have already met to map out a possible strategy should the situation there worsen significantly. The organizers will always consider the side of caution. If there is the slightest concern for the safety of attendees, the event will be either relocated or postponed. Rome is not affected by the outbreak at this time, and there is no indication that it will be. While we are monitoring the situation extremely closely, an objective and rational assessment does not warrant a change at this time. As always, we urge attendees to make decisions that are best for them, and look forward to exciting awards ceremony on March 22nd and 23rd.

We will also update this information as necessary.
