About the FEP

about-banner

Introduction

The FEP is composed of the national professional associations of the following countries: Armenia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Belgium, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Malta, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, The Netherlands, Ukraine and United Kingdom. The central reference authority for Photography in the EU, it represents over 50.000 professional photographers in Europe.

Defending your rights

The FEP defends the rights of professional photographers directly and in communion with national and international organisations. about-insetIt represents the interests of member associations on a global scale on topics like education, training, professional standards, authors rights etc. The FEP cooperates in the organisation of national events of member associations and international congresses, and promotes an exchange of keynote speakers.

Professional Qualifications

The Federation has established a set of European professional qualifications. The QEP (Qualified European Photographer), with about 450 qualified photographers’ from 22 countries since it began in 1999, has become the reference in professional photography throughout Europe.

The FEP also organises the MASTER QEP qualification; 52 top European photographers have already received a Master degree for their supreme quality.

The FEP also launched a new basic professional qualification (the EP) - starting from September 2012 - and an award for the emerging talents (FETA).

Finally, the FEP launched in 2015 a new set of qualification for videographers.

Competitions

The FEP also established the European Professional Photographer of the Year Awards and the FEP European Photo Book of the Year Award to promote the highest standards in European professional photography. THE FEP also run each month the FEP Facebook Cover Picture of the Month contest. The FEP is the Forum where all European professional associations meet, confer and act.

UEAPME Member

The FEP is also a member of the UEAPME (the European craft and SME’s network), and of the IPC (International Photographic Council), an ONG recognised by the United Nations.

Membership

The association is composed of full members, affiliated members, and individual members.

Full members

The full members are the actual member associations and those admitted as such by the General Assembly. To be admitted as a full member: a national association must be made up of professional photographers based in Europe, legally constituted in their country of origin, provided they are nationally representative, they include a significant number of professional photographers and they operate democratically, with each member having one vote.

Affiliate members

May be admitted as affiliate members of the FEP : Associations of Professional Photographers from countries outside Europe; all legal persons (such as societies, corporations, foundations, institutions and national industries, international corporations etc.) related to professional photography in Europe.

Individual members

Individual members can be accepted into the FEP, providing they are professional photographers legally registered in European countries and resident in countries where the Fep has not yet a member national association, the proviso being that if a member organisation was admitted, they should join it within 2 years. Affiliate or individual members, once admitted, may participate in all training and qualifications organised and authorised by the FEP.

Becoming a Member of the FEP

In order to become a full, affiliated or an individual member of FEP, the candidate must officially communicate their request, by sending the FEP Secretariat (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ) a letter of intent and (for the full members) a copy of its constitution. The admission decision will be made at the General Assembly by a simple majority of votes present or represented.

Annual Fees

All members pay an annual fee whose amount is fixed by the General Assembly. Full and affiliate members have different annual fees, depending form their actual membership. For an individual, there is a fee of € 50,00, for which they would receive the information and be eligible to apply for the FEP European qualifications, and to enter the FEP competition at the members rates.

A history of the Federation of European Photographers

"I have been involved in the FEP ‘life’ primarily through my Italian Association (SIAF CNA), which I served as the Executive Secretary from 1987 up to 2008, following an invitation to a meeting held in Photokina in1990. There was initially some skepticism because some of the national associations were still "thrilled" by previous experiences, but in 1992 the FEP, under this name, met again in Photokina, and it was decided to form an unrelated Federation of some national Associations. Ricky Stevens, from Ireland, was inaugurated as its President.

For a couple of years, the association met only as a "European annexe" to the WCPP (World council of Professional Photographers), a global organization based in USA. The President of WCPP attended FEP meetings as a guest. There were endless and tiring discussions to decide if FEP should exist as a self-governing organization.

giusIn 1994 the Italian associations SIAF-CNA , together with Franco Turcati, put forward his candidature to hold the Presidency of the FEP.  Once Turcati was elected, I automatically became the General Secretary of the FEP, (an office maintained until 2008, when I was appointed as its CEO). It was decided to set up a constitution, fully independent from the WCPP, asking for formal verification by its members.

In those years, new members joined the Federation, and finally the new constitution was formally approved at the General Assembly held in Gmunden, Austria on April 4th 1997, signed by the founder members (the  Associations of Professional Photographers in Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, United Kingdom and Yugoslavia). The FEP was finally  registered under Belgian Law  on January 1999.

In 2001, Luc Peeters, from Belgium was elected President of the FEP followed in 2008 by Neil Warner, from Ireland, who is currently in office. Neil will be replaced by Jorgen Brandt, President elect, from Denmark, on September 2012.

The main aim of the FEP was immediately to validate the standard of qualifications of professional photographers throughout Europe. In 1998, thanks to the substantial help of the British Institute of Professional Photography, (the BIPP), the FEP instigated a European qualification called QEP. A first mock  judging session took place in Dublin, and subsequently, the very first QEP session in Dijon, France, in the Spring of 1999. Since then, we have had 24 judging sessions with 400 successful QEPs (and  34 Master QEPs), chaired initially by Ray Lowe and then by Jim Lowe, (no relation!) both from the UK.

In 2008 we launched the first FEP Professional Photographer of the Year Award. In 2009 the Fine Art Photograph of the Year Award. In 2010, the Photo Book Award. In 2011, the FEP joined the UEAPME, the European craft and SME’s network and the International Photographic Council at the UN."

Giuseppe Scozzi, FEP, CEO.
