After a second place last year in the home edition, in 2019 Team Australia wins its first WPC! Second place trophy went to USA, defending champion, with Mexico in the third place. On April 8th, at the end of the celebration for the 125 anniversary from the foundation of the Norges Fotografforbund, the World Photographic Cup 2019 winners have been announced in the historical “Drammens Teater”, in Drammen, Norway.

The WPC competition is truly a global organisation unlike any other in professional photography. This year 32 national photographic teams entered the edition n.6 of this one-of-a-kind competition, from Europe, Asia, North & South America and Oceania. This was the most ever.
All individual winners, the “Best of Nation” and the top 10 teams of the 2019 World Photographic Cup (WPC), have been announced and presented with their awards. The Ceremony has been broadcast online and watched from around the world.

Gold medal winning images
Individual gold medals for the 6 categories of the competition went to photographers from Australia, Finland, Malaysia, Mexico and USA (2), with Canada, Czech Republic, France, Portugal, Slovakia, Sweden and The Netherlands also joining the medal circle. All winning images, thanks to the WPC Gold Sponsor ChromaLuxe will be visible for 4 weeks at the Fotografien Hus in Oslo.

Lists of medals winners – in the actual order of rank (from Gold to Bronze)
COMMERCIAL: Patricia Soon Mei Yung (Malaysia), Dusan Holovej (Slovakia), Mark Engelen (The Netherlands)
ILLUSTRATION: Onni Wiljami Kinnunen (Finland), Nicolas Boutruche (France), Diogo Freitas (Portugal)

The TOP 10 TEAMS circle!
The top 3 scores in each category receive medals. But the Top 10 scores in each category count towards their country’s team total (10 points for the Gold, 9 for the Silver, and so on. So every photographer whose image ends up in the Top 10 contributes points to their team’s total).

2019 Cup Winner Australia: 56 point, 4 medals (1 Gold, 2 Silver, 1 Bronze) and 3 Top 10 finishers
Second place USA: 40 points, 2 Gold medals, and 4 Top 10 finishers

Truls Løtvedt, President of Norges Fotografforbund Association of Norway, Host Event Country and FEP President said: “What an outstanding performance from the Australian team this year! Wonderful images resulting into a well deserved 1st place. And what a great event in prestigious Drammens Teater, honoring all the winners in a fabulous way. We, the Norwegian association NFF, love having been chosen to host this incredible competition award ceremony, and look forward to competing for the WPC again the coming years. Well done, Aussies!”

Giuseppe Scozzi, WPC Chief Executive: “There is not in the world a program with photography like this, which is able to conjugate international fellowship and national pride, and moreover respect for professional photographers worldwide”. The WPC CEO also thanked the Norges Fotografforbund for having organized such a beautiful event, and announced that the dates and venue of the next WPC announcements will be announced in a very short while.

On Sunday, March 17th, the FEP held its annual General Assembly in Innsbruck, Austria. In a way it was a historical meeting, the end of an old era and the beginning of a new one; due to changes in Belgian legislation, FEP in registered in Belgium, the FEP needed to be changed from FEP ivzw (international not for profit organisation)  to FEP vzw (not for profit organisation). So at the Innsbruck meeting, the GA voted for the dissolution of the FEP ivzw and to continue as the FEP vzw. This change does not affect the daily operation of the FEP, but was rather a formality that needed to be done.

Presidential elections were held at General Assembly, the sitting president Truls Løtvedt from Norway was unanimously elected to continue into a second term.

The FEP also gained a new member association from Russia, the National Association of Professionals of Photoindustry. A warm welcome to our newest members!

The Federation of European Professional Photographers is proud to announce that, Tim Hoffesommer, a student at the Handwerkskammer University of Dortmund in Germany, is the 2019 & last ever winner of our FETA Award, with a stunning entry of 9 coffee related images.

With merits awarded to Auriane Argaud, a student from IRFMA 30 in Nimes, France with a quirky twist on canine photography & Agnieszka Iwanska, an apprentice at Fotograf Løtvedt in Bergen, Norway with a set of portraits. Each entry was a panel of nine images, with students from all over Europe submitting work.

The Award Ceremony took place in the House of Music of Innsbruck, Austria, on March 16th, 2019. The winners were awarded by the FETA Chairman Jim Lowe and by Erik Wiegman, representing ChromaLuxe, sponsor of this competition.

The initials, FETA stood for FEP Emerging Talent Award, but after much criticism about being too cheesy, the competition will now be known as the FEP Young Photographer Award and will be open not only to students on nationally recognised courses but to assistants and photographers under the age of thirty.

FETA Chairman, Jim Lowe, thought that the finalists had shown a great deal of expertise, especially the winner. He wished them all luck in their chosen careers.

On Saturday, March 16th, the FEP revealed the results of its annual competition in Innsbruck, Austria. The coveted title of Professional Photographer of the Year 2019 went to a Finnish photographer, Juhamatti Vahdersalo, winner of the Golden Camera in the Illustrative / Digital category of the competition and a strong competitor in a number of others.

“Thank you all, it’s amazing, I’m so honoured by this, I don’t know what else to say!” said Juhamatti Vahdersalo, receiving the trophy at the Ceremony.

Other Golden Camera winners included Enda Cavanagh from Ireland – Commercial, Patrizia Burra from Italy – Fashion, Eberhard Ehmke from Germany – Landscape, Laila Villebeck from Sweden – Portrait, Marcos Rodriguez from Spain – Reportage, Hannu Rainamo Finland – Sports, Carlos Felipe Ortiz from Spain – Wedding and Martin Steenhaut from Belgium – Wildlife.
The Golden Camera winner was also awarded in the Students and Young Photographers category, although that is not a part of the main competition. This winner was Dawid Galinski from Poland.

This year the competition had a record breaking amount of entries, over 2400 images.

An international jury consisting of 20 judges worked hard over a period of several weeks to assess the images.

Johan Brouwers, the Chairman of the competition said: ”I’m very happy that my first year as chairman of the competition is such a big succes. I greatly appreciate the wok of the judges. It was a huge job going through so many images. The scores at the top were very close, the difference between Gold and Silver was sometimes only a few hundreds of a point. It was an honour to see the work of the best of the best of so many European professional photographers.”

FEP Board Meeting in Tbilisi, November 2018, report

FEP Board Meeting in Tbilisi, November 2018, report

Address:
Website:

Important message : The date and the venue of the next General Assembly will be changed, and the annual competition award ceremony will be communicated soon.

The Federation of European Professional Photographers’ board convened under its President, Truls Løtvedt, on November 19, 2018 in Tbilisi, Georgia. This is a summary of the decisions made.

Event calendar 2019
The exact dates for the 2019 judging session were confirmed; these are June 8-9 in Bergen, Norway and November 16-17 in Prague, Czech Republic. The General Assembly and the annual competition award ceremony will take place in May 8-9 during Photokina fair in Cologne, Germany.

Judging session timetables
It was also decided that the QEP/MQEP applications will be opened in the future earlier on to encourage early applications and thus ensuring the judging events. Early applicants will also received a price incentive, prices for last minute applications will be increased.

Press releases
After the judging session in Tbilisi, each successful new QEP/MQEP received a press release template for his/her use as well as an image of his/her panel with the judges. This new policy will continue in the future.

Developing the FEP
In the future, the FEP Board will form task forces both as a way to involve the Board members more but also as a way of transferring knowledge (people have different areas of expertise and this helps us to utilise them more).

New Brochure
The FEP will prepare a new brochure to advertise itself. The brochure will be available at Photokina and members association can receive it to use for their own advertising purposes.

FETA will become FYPA
Since the name FETA has been problematic for obvious reasons and also the link to Universities has proven to be problematic due to the different way of organising photographic education is various members countries. It was decided to change the name into FYPA, The FEP Young Photographer Award. Currently the entry is extended to the same closing date as the main competition, January 6, 2019.
In the future though the main competition’s Student category and FYPA will merge.

How to make the FEP more visible in its member associations’ communication
It was decided to conduct a survey to investigate how the FEP is visible in its member associations’ internal (and external) communications and furthermore, how it could be improved.

The Federation of European Professional Photographers’ board convened for the first time under its new President, Truls Løtvedt, on June 11, 2018 in Tampere, Finland. This meeting was then followed up by an online meeting a couple weeks afterwards.

New website

During these two meetings, the board decided to completely update the FEP website. The new website will be operational in the autumn; it wil be mobile friendly and it will have new features.

Event calendar 2019

The 2019 judging session will be organized in Bergen, Norway (June) and in Prague, Czech Republic (November). The location of the General Assembly and Awards is still open, FEP is searching for a national event within its member associations to partner with.

Active participation of the Board members

Board members have now been given different tasks to engage them more into the daily functions of the FEP. Tasks include for example copyright issues,  maintenance of relations and improved dialogue to/from both excisting member associations and sponsors, seeking new sponsorship and recruiting new members. FEP is also looking for a new Press Officer to implement a stronger online presence.

GDPR

The EU General Data Protection Regulation was discussed. As relevant national laws vary from country to country, it is impossible to give a full proof European wide guide on that. It was agreed to have every association/country to handle the GDPR nationally, adapting to their own national laws.

Photokina 2018

The FEP will be exhibiting in September in Photokina together with its German member association CV. Come and visit us there!FEP Group picture by Tiina Haring, MQEP, Finland.

ATTENTION! You may have received a rather strange email, supposedly from us signed by Giuseppe Scozzi, within the past few days. IT IS AN ATTEMPT TO SCAM! It seems the FEP suffered some sort of a cyber hack and as you can probably guess from its content, it is NOT a real email from us, but a hoax or a scam, so please ignore the message and delete it.

The spam comes from giuseppe@europeanphotographers.eu (which is NOT a real FEP address) and it talks about financial obligation in rather bad English as well. If you reply, they give some bank details and even a fake invoice! Be careful and don’t answer, just DELETE the message.

We are very sorry for the inconvenience, thank you for your understanding.
